Down by the Bay

Like many charming stories… It all began with a mermaid. This project like every successful design by Northlight Interiors, was sparked by an inspiration piece and took shape as creativity and personality filled in the details. “Cottage by the Sea” though not technically on the beach, was inspired by just such a lovely bit of whimsy; a treasured mermaid art piece belonging to the homeowner. While many of our clients enjoy coastal themes, in this case the feel of salt-water and fresh breezes are authentic and familiar reminders of time spent in actual commercial fishing by the lovely lady of this land-locked haven.

A serene color palette of watery blues and green softened by sandy neutrals flows from the art throughout the entire home. The living room was challenging as it presented a very tall, narrow space with disjointed windows and few architectural features. To balance the proportions of the room paint and millwork were called upon to add interest and divide the vertical space. Visually uniting the windows to each other are floor-to-ceiling sweeps of billowy white fabric panels. Antique mirrors hang between upper and lower windows sparkling in the sunlight and reflecting the show-stopping large, shell-encrusted chandelier from Currey Lighting. Vintage styled wall sconces from Aidan Gray are perfectly spaced to frame the gracious sideboard by Lexington Furniture which is graced with the mermaid’s portrait and topped with sparkling glass accessories. Over the mellow pine floorboards a swirling pattered wool rug by Dash and Albert grounds the seating area and adds fresh color under the neutral upholstery pieces. A button-tufted velvet sofa from Norwalk Furniture offers deep-seated comfort as well as a touch of elegance. Custom coastal motif decorative pillows add personality and invite guests to curl up and feel very much at home. A practical and beautiful round button-top cocktail ottoman from Norwalk is styled with a tray holding more artfully arranged sea-worthy treasures. Flanking the sideboard across from this seating arrangement are matching linen-covered spool chairs custom-made by Miles Talbott Furniture.
